About the Presidio of San Francisco
The Presidio of San Francisco packs more than two centuries of history into one sprawling facility. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, The Presidio offers visitors a look at the workings of a military post as well as some of great scenic views. It is particularly noted for the views of the Golden Gate Bridge available from the park shores.
First fortified as a military post by the Spanish in 1776, the Presidio became an American post in 1848. It remained an American military base for 150 years before decommissioning in 1989. The National Park Service assumed control of the facility in 1994. Presidio of San Francisco National Park combines historic interpretations of the posts military past with interesting architecture and beaches and woodlands of unmatched natural beauty.
